I wouldn't say the space shuttle is a failed project.

It achieved its most (if not all) technological goals, paved the road for all possible successors. Even the re-usable concept is not out-date at all, I am sure re-usable vehicle will still play vital role in short range commute between ground and orbit, as well as between orbiting space stations.
Being expensive is the Achilles' heel, but pioneering has never been cheap at all.
Bottom line, I have a faith in space exploraton, it will proceed, as long as we mankind does not go self destruction first.
