you can "日后靠自己" all the way to the end. That also means you'll die a sudden death, hopefully at an very old age. otherwise 钞票 is definitely needed. That's also why i buy long-term care insurance to save some 钞票 - the premium's not that expensive but in the case i can't take care of my self, i'll have something to fall back on.
and i'd say you send your father-in-law to a nursing home - just make sure he gets enough care and visit him often. It'll be good to both parties given the daily pressures we get from just making a living.
